TÜİK report: "The elderly population in Turkey is rapidly increasing."
The Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) has published its report titled "Statistics on the Elderly, 2024." The report reveals a rapid increase in the elderly population in Turkey, significantly altering the demographic structure. According to TÜİK data, the population aged 65 and over has grown by 20.7% in the past five years, reaching 9 million 112 thousand 298 individuals. The proportion of the elderly within the total population has risen to 10.6%.
Noteworthy changes are observed in the distribution of the elderly population by age groups. In 2024, 63.4% of the elderly population falls within the 65-74 age bracket, while 28.8% are aged 75-84, and 7.8% are 85 and older. The increasing elderly population reflects Turkey's ongoing demographic transformation, driven by declining fertility rates and advancements in healthcare, indicating that this trend will continue in the coming years.
