Volcanic eruption at Mount Kanlaon in the Philippines: Ash fell on villages.
The ashfall from the volcanic eruption on Negros Island in the Philippines has raised health concerns for local residents.
One of the country's most active volcanoes erupted on Tuesday, causing ash to rise up to 4,000 meters in the sky. The eruption of Mount Kanlaon, located in the center of Negros Island, one of the country's 24 most active volcanoes, has raised health concerns due to the ashfall affecting nearby villages. However, no casualties have been reported so far. The previous eruption of the 2,435-meter volcano last October had forced hundreds of villagers to flee to emergency shelters. The volcano is currently at a third alarm level. The Philippines is among the countries most vulnerable to natural disasters. Typically, around 20 typhoons and storms hit the Philippines each year, which is situated in the Pacific "Ring of Fire," an area characterized by a chain of volcanoes and seismically active regions that spans approximately 40,233 km surrounding the Pacific Ocean. According to National Geographic, 90% of earthquakes occur in this region, which hosts 75% of the world's volcanoes.
